The Integritas Institute for Ethics is a department of the John Paul II Newman Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Founded in 1997, the Institute brings a Catholic vision of justice and professional ethics into dialogue centered within the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) community and with interested professionals, providing symposia, adult education events, Internet media, and other resources in bioethics, business ethics, and daily ethical decision-making.
The Integritas Institute for Ethics was founded in 1997 to foster a deeper appreciation of the ethical questions that arise from everyday professional and business experiences. It works toward providing a constructive forum for exploring and addressing these complex issues.
The Institute addresses the spiritual and ethical formation and education of health care professionals, health care students, and medical students. Integritas focuses upon the notion of a just community and the just distribution of health care, and insight into and exploration of those components of the human experience of illness that transcend the science of medicine. The importance of moral acts within the context of medical professionalism, the significance of of the role of conscience for provider and patient and the relationship between faith and reason have been constant themes. During the School Year there lunchtime and evening lectures, as well as a Bioethics Symposium in the spring.
On the business ethics front Integritas facilitates conversations with professors and business professionals who can provide a model of moral leadership for business students through their personal values and professional ethics. Since the decisions that companies and business people make have social, economic and moral consequences at an organizational level, it is vital for UIC students to possess sound business understandings that are rooted in ethical principles as they prepare to enter corporate America. Evening business lecture presentations and our annual business ethics conferences have been the lynchpin of the Integritas presence in the Business School since the Institute’s founding.
